What to Expect When Donating Blood

How does the donation process work? What can you expect?

You’ll need to find a donation center near you and set up an appointment. When you arrive, you’ll register and complete a brief questionnaire about your health history, and any recent travel.

Once approved, you’ll be seated comfortably while your arm is sterilized, and an attendant prepares to draw blood.

After your blood has been drawn, you’ll relax with a small snack and drink, for 10 to 15 minutes, just to make sure you’re not dizzy.

You can resume your day knowing the blood donation you’ve made may save a life.

  • Make sure to get plenty of rest the night before.

  • Hydrate. Drinking plenty of water makes your veins easier to find and access. It also helps keep you from getting dizzy.

  • Have your ID ready. You’ll need to show a driver’s license or passport when registering.

  • Wear a comfortable shirt with either short sleeves or sleeves that can easily be rolled up.
